What are the steps to becoming a freelance writer? It seems like such a daunting task, and although you read a lot of “Freelance Writing Tips for Beginners” articles, you still can’t figure out how to find your first writing job.

My experience has been the same as yours – frustrated, lost, and wondering what you’re doing wrong. It’s not an enjoyable place to be. I am here to help you jump-start your freelance writing career by laying out this step-by-step guide. In addition, it’s not necessary to purchase a $200 course in order to get started.

Know how to write well

It is important that you are able to write well. Let me explain it to you in simple terms: if you’re not good at writing, you will not be hired.

There’s one more thing you should know: It is possible to be great at one kind of writing and terrible at another.

Perhaps you’ve written novels since you were a child. You have learned a lot about dialogue, plotting, character arcs, etc. However, now you want to break into the freelance world. You want to earn a lot of money by writing for a well-known website.

The world of freelance writing is different from story writing, so everything you learned there won’t work for you. You now need to research how to write good copy and make sure you know how to write it.

It is now possible to choose a niche in which you are an expert. All you have to do is be prepared to spend more time researching than writing. 

So here’s what you do:

  • You need to decide what you want to write about before you begin.
  • You could also browse through some freelance writing job boards in order to make sure that the type of writing you are looking for is in demand.
  • You may have to try again if that is not the case. If it is, get writing right away.

The catch here is that you have to write for free. Maybe not for a client, but for yourself. Due to your lack of writing experience, you must prove that you are an A+ writer. To begin, you must write for free.

  • Upwork. Upwork is loved by some people and hated by some. If you are new to writing, you may have a hard time getting accepted, but keep this in mind.
  • Freelancer. I do not recommend you to use a board that requires “bidding” and isn’t worth your time, in my opinion. There is an extreme amount of competition for new writers.
  • Scripted. – After you are approved, you must pass a test/submit a writing sample, and then you are rated so clients know what they are getting.
  • LinkedIn. Though I’ve never used LinkedIn for anything other than having a sort of online resume to direct people to, it is possible to search for jobs here as well.
  • We Work Remotely. The layout of this job board is a bit strange, but simply hit Ctrl + F and type in “copywriting” to find the job you’re looking for.
  • Indeed. — Yep! This might be a traditional job listing site to a certain extent, but you can also find writing opportunities on this site. You can choose whether you want to work remotely or locally.

Figure out your rate

There is a lot of advice on the web that can help you figure out a freelance writing rate. There are a lot of confusing things on this site, and it does not give a great answer to your questions. I would like to suggest a few general guidelines you can follow:

  • Beginner freelance writers usually charge somewhere in the range of $0.10 per word as their starting rate. Anything less than that is a waste of your time, but if you are in a desperate situation, you may not be able to choose. Even if you end up at less than $0.10 per word, you shouldn’t have to stay there for long.
  • There are some companies that charge per project or per hour. Make sure that you know how much research will be involved as well as how many words will be needed before you agree on a project rate. In terms of hourly rates, I would say that beginners should start between $10 and $15 an hour. However, there are lots of variables involved.
  • Taxes, insurance, and all that jazz should be taken into account as well. In most cases, you will send invoices instead of receiving a paycheck, so you need to keep in mind that your taxes will not be automatically deducted from your paycheck.
  • It’s up to you what your worth is at the end of the day. If you’re still learning about how to create online content, don’t charge a lot of money just because you need it. Doing so would be dishonest. However, you shouldn’t sell yourself short either. When you think about your rates, ask yourself, “Would I make more money working in food service than I would at these rates?” If you answered yes, your rates are so low that freelance writing isn’t worthwhile.
  • The outside expertise you have counts for something. I can tell you from experience that if you’ve ever worked in the medical field and you want to get into medical writing, you’ll be able to make more money in that field than I would since I know nothing about it.

I have used this pitch and it has worked great, but keep in mind that some job ads require a resume, and others request that you fill out a form. There is a possibility that one potential client will ask for two samples and another will ask for five samples. So, you will need to adjust your expectations accordingly.

Things to keep in mind while writing your pitch:

  • You are selling your writing skills, so make your pitch stand out. Keep it professional, but show some personality. A dry, boring pitch will not get you hired. You cannot give your entire life’s story when you only need to describe your experience.
  • Make sure you follow the instructions. There are so many job ads with very specific instructions, right down to the subject line of the email.
  • Feel confident in yourself – If an editor gets a whiff that you don’t think you can handle the job you’re applying for, your pitch will be ignored. It’s important to never consider yourself a beginner, and you should never say that you’ll “probably” be able to do the job or that you “should” be able to complete it on time. Always remember that you’re selling yourself. Make sure you do it well!

Write for a living as a freelancer

Your pitches get sent out, and you get a few replies in return. Congratulations! People are interested in what you have to say.

Depending on the client, things are either going to move slowly or quickly. They might already have a set rate in mind, or they might be open to negotiation. In order to get a taste of how you can help a potential client who is not a fan of your rates, offer them a small selection of articles at a discounted price for a limited time.

The chances are that if you’re dealing with a bigger company, their contract will have already been drafted and they’re ready to go. The case might be different if you’re dealing with a smaller one. There is no rule that says you have to have a contract, but if you have one, you’ll be more protected in case a client decides they do not want to pay you.

I have to admit that everything from here on out feels a bit like the Wild West. This could be made as simple as writing a blog post in Google Docs, handing it over, sending out a PayPal invoice, and getting paid all within the same day. Or the project could be completed after several rounds of editing and a monthly payment schedule. I have personally experienced both. It really depends on the project. It is important to remember that you should always produce quality content, no matter what the circumstance may be.

When you are unable to get hired for a position

How do you deal with the situation if you are not hired? The solution is to troubleshoot.

It is possible that there are any number of reasons why you didn’t get hired if you’re an inexperienced writer. The following are a few to watch out for:

  • The instructions in the job advertisement were not followed by you. In some cases, you may be asked to do strange things, like putting your favourite ice cream at the bottom of the email. Take the time to read the entire ad and make sure you are paying attention!
  • Your writing isn’t ready yet. The first thing you will need to do if you’re brand new to this is to practice it. To become a skilled writer, you cannot become one overnight! Make sure you take time to educate yourself on what makes a good article.
  • Your pitch was not good. – If you followed the instructions in the job ad, was the work you submitted relevant to the position? Or did the recipient lose interest if your pitch was too long? Did the subject line of your email be concise and eye-catching?
  • There was no follow-up from you. I have seen some ads that ask that you not follow up, and some that remain silent on the subject entirely. It’s not a bad idea to send another email to those who remain silent (or for cold pitches), as long as you handle it correctly. You may want to try offering a trial period, a discounted price, or a simple reminder if you haven’t received a response within two to three weeks. You may want to find an article that contains some information that your prospective client might find useful. If you find one, please send it over for review.

What to do if you can’t get a freelance writing job

I would like to start by saying that you shouldn’t be worried. If you are interested in becoming a writer, there are many ways to do so. Some more things you can do to get your first client.

  • Consider taking a course. If you want to become a successful writer, you need to know how to write well. That is something that some people can learn on their own. I would recommend investing in some knowledge if you’re the type of person who needs someone to walk them every step of the way through the process of creating copy that sells.
  • I would recommend starting local – every city has a lot of small businesses to choose from. Identify one with a blog that has been abandoned or an outdated website and offer to help. Maybe you can write their monthly newsletter or take over their social media posts.
  • You can try to write for free – According to my opinion, this should be your last resort. In so far as you have some examples that have been well-written and enough knowledge, you should be able to get by. But if you have trouble getting published, this could get your name attached to a piece that gets published.
  • Remember to keep track of those pitches – That is how I got my first freelancing job.
  • You might want to consider trying a different niche – it is possible that the niche you have chosen does not need writers. It’s possible you are approaching the wrong audience by cold pitching.
